W+CO designed two new, state-of-the-art Fitness Centers for Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Both 25,000-square-foot facilities are similar but one was designed specifically for women and the other for men, as appropriate to the Middle Eastern culture. Each two-story fitness center is organized with the various activities and spaces radiating around an oval-shaped central spine. The second floor features a glass floor that creates transparency and openness, and a dramatic circular staircase between the first and second floors. Lighting was designed into the project, and furniture and equipment were specified. W+CO completed design documents in early 2016, and construction recently began in September 2016.
