temple university boathouse

academic

W+CO designed a prototype for a new boathouse for the Temple University Rowing Team. The rowers had been operating out of the East Park Canoe House, owned by the City of Philadelphia. When that older building was declared structurally unsound, the Temple team stored their boats in a tent next to the old, unusable boathouse. To meet the need for Temple’s proposed, new boathouse, W+CO designed a two-story, contemporary building that meshes with the Boathouse Row aesthetic, but could be built inexpensively and with modern amenities. A balcony on the second floor provides a river viewing area, and is made festive with pennants flying from the tri-peaked roofline. Through many twists and turns over several years, funding was finally acquired to renovate the existing boathouse, and a new Boathouse was never built. But the Temple Rowing teams will soon have a home to call their own.
